On November 28, Mr. Stefan Creangă, the Director of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) met with World Bank energy team to discuss the options and risks related to natural gas supply in the Republic of Moldova.
The participants discussed the risks related to a possible shut down of natural gas supplies to the Republic of Moldova prompted by the uncertainties related to the Russian gas transit on the territory of Ukraine. The energy team from the World Bank and the Director of ANRE analyzed also the possible scenarios and ways of managing a potential crisis situation, which also include the use of national fuel oil reserves that are stored in case of emergency.
In the long run, the gas supply options in the Republic of Moldova are expected to increase with the launch of gas pipeline Iasi - Ungheni – Chisinau. Mr. Creangă mentioned that the Administration Council of ANRE is in direct contact with gas suppliers and transmission system operators in the Republic of Moldova in order to monitor and ensure a stable execution of the licensed activities. ANRE also works closely with the Ukrainian regulator to monitor the supply of natural gas and facilitate the development of the cross-border projects related to gas and electricity transactions.
Both sides stressed the importance of diversifying the gas supply sources in the Republic of Moldova to avoid potential disruptions, and ensure a short and long term energy security. At the same time, the use of alternative gas sources requires a thorough analysis of the investment costs so that it does not affect the level of tariffs.
