On November 2, 2022, the directors of the Administration Council of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) met with the team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the progress of the implementation of the Memorandum on Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP).
Given the current energy crisis, the discussions focused on the latest evolution of prices for electricity and natural gas and their impact on consumers in the Republic of Moldova. The IMF representatives were interested to know more about the measures taken by the authorities to ensure the continuity of electricity supply following the interruption of supplies from Ukraine and the refusal of the Dnestrovsk power plant (MGRES) to extend the electricity supply contract with a total interruption of supplies from November 1 2022.
The parties have also discussed how ANRE adjusted the tariffs for natural gas and electricity in the context of a sharp increase in prices and the volatility of supply sources. The representatives of the IMF mentioned that the prompt adjustment of tariffs is necessary to ensure that operators have a sufficient level of liquidity to be able to conduct their operations.
The IMF representatives appreciated the availability of ANRE specialists to provide a clear and detailed information.
