On March 11, 2025, Alexandru Ursu, Director of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE), held a working meeting with the representatives of International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During the meeting, IMF team members have addressed a number of topics related to natural gas and electricity sources of supply, the current mechanisms for energy procurement, the evolution of prices on the regional market and their impact on electricity and natural gas tariffs in Republic of Moldova, and other aspects related to the liberalization of the natural gas market.
Alexandru Ursu mentioned that ANRE, central authorities and market participants continue their efforts to liberalize the natural gas market, adding that, at the moment, around 10% of the natural gas market in the Republic of Moldova operates with unregulated prices.
The participants also discussed the adjustment of electricity tariffs, given that Moldovan authorities no longer buy electricity from the Cuciurgan Power Plant (MGRES) as of January 1, 2025. The experts discussed the interconnection with Romania and Ukraine, the development of internal transmission networks, the challenges of balancing the electricity system, the capacities allocated for each country within ENTSO-E, the differentiated prices for electricity, etc.
At the end of the meeting, the IMF representatives reiterated their support and availability to provide the necessary technical assistance to the development of the energy market in the Republic of Moldova.
