On October 22nd, 2019, Mr. Octavian Calmâc, Director of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) and other representatives of the Agency met a group of experts from the Bureau of Energy Resources of the U.S. Department of State and Department of Energy.
The participants of the meeting have discussed the issues related to the national energy sector, the sustainability of the natural gas and electricity supplies and alternative sources of energy in case of gas supply interrupted on January 1, 2020.
Mr. Octavian Calmâc mentioned that the subject of securing natural gas supplies for the internal market is on the agenda of the parliament and the government of the Republic of Moldova. The results of the negotiations with the authorities of the Russian Federation and Gazprom are optimistic, and have positive dynamics that will allow to solve the issues raised within a short period of time.
However, in order to minimize the risks, the national gas supplier is negotiating with partners from the European Union (EU) to develop alternative routes of natural gas supply from EU market, using current infrastructure.
The experts from US mentioned that the purpose of their visit was to examine the challenges of the natural gas sector in Moldova and come up with some suggestions on actions necessary to be taken to avoid the risks of gas supply interruption and provide solutions in the event of exceptional situations.
At the end of the meeting the participants reflected on the various scenarios and evolutions on the electricity market, and how the government, the regulatory authority and market operators could act to solve these
